BOOK REVIEW: BORN TO DARKNESS

FRIENDS REVIEWER - Sandy Krantz
This story, part of the "Destiny" series, is set in a future both fantastic and frightening

Dishonorably discharged, former Navy SEAL Shane Laughlin is down to his last ten bucks when he finds work as a test subject at the Obermeyer Institute.  This research facility plunges him into a strange world where scientists, including women half his size, can kick his ass.

He soon discovers certain individuals possess the ability to access untapped areas of the brain.  Known as the Greater Thans, they are recruited by OI and trained to use their powers.

But in the depression in America, the divide between the have and have nots has grown wider.  Those who are rich and reckless enough buy Destiny - a highly addictive drug that can make anyone a Greater Than.  The Cartel known as the Organization, is mass-producing Destiny and demand is growing.  But few realize the drug's danger and the dirty secret of Destiny’s crucial ingredient.

Michelle “Mac” Mackensie knows the truth and as one of the OI team of operatives, she is determined to end the scourge of Destiny.  But her kick ass attitude get knocked for a loop when she discovers her one night stand is one of the test subjects.  And although Shane descovers he’s not a Greater Than, as an ex- SEAL he’s got talents of his own.

Suzanne Brockmann has been on the New York Times best seller list many times for her action and romance, "Trouble Shooters" and "Tall Dark and Dangerous" series.  Both contain Navy Seals as characters.

WATCHING THE CARPET

Why would you watch the carpet? Why should you watch the carpet?

If you've taken a close look at the carpet lately, you will see that it has is a little tattered around the edges. The color is a little "off," the patches are starting to wear out, and it's almost beyond the point of TLC making any difference.

It's been a good carpet and has served the library well, but it now needs to be replaced. And the Friends of the Library have been among those beating the drum for change.

The plea for replacement carpeting has been heard; the need has been verified, and we understand that one of these days, the carpet-layers will arrive. So keep your eyes on the carpet. A wonderful event is going to take place, and if you are watching, you'll see it!

HERE COME THE CHICKENS

Surely you have heard that big things come in little packages. It's never been truer than with this amazing memoir of Alice Walker's hands-on affair with her chickens.

In case you can't read the cover of this book, after "The Chicken Chronicles" Alice adds "Sitting with the Angels Who Have Returned with My Memories: Glorious, Rufus, Gertrude Stein, Splendor, Hortensia, Agnes of God, the Gladyses & Babe: A Memoir." Now if that doesn't entice you to read this book, perhaps the rest of my blog will.

As some of you know, I am pre-disposed to like chickens and often bemoan the fact that in my lifetime I've never had one to call my own. So I was set to like this book from the outset. I have always known of Alice -- I mean, how can you NOT remember that this is the writer of "The Color Purple," a Pulitzer-prize winner and an advocate for the world's dispossessed. That alone should make you want to see what she has to say about chickens. That, and wondering what kind of person would name a chicken "Agnes of God?"

Even though I admit to not understanding poetry - and there was a tinch of poetry in this book - nevertheless I found this one of the most touching, life-affirming and thought-provoking books I've read in a long time. Made up of 37 small entries, her words encompass everything from her back yard to her past to her family, to world leaders and, of course to her beloved chickens. Her sensitivity to both big and small often made her words carry with them the ability to put a lump in my throat.

Here's an example: Babe, one of her chickens meets an accidental death. She find the chicken, holds it on her lap for a while and thinks about suffering before death, hoping that Babe didn't experience it.

"On one of his tapes, my teacher Jack Kornfield talks about what we are likely to think about as we are dying. The most important question we will ask ourselves - having long given up asking such questions of others - is, "Did I love well? After all, we're the only ones who could know. I think an acceptable answer is: I loved as well as I could.

"What helps me with Babe's death is that the day before, not knowing the future, I sat with her on my lap, stroking and admiring her. It delighted me that her experience of being a chicken on Earth among humans was a loving one. That she ate only the best food, slept in a clean chicken house, had a nest ready for her and her eggs, should she ever happen to lay any. If someone had tried to tell Babe about the cruelty done to chickens by humans, and she could understand the language, she would not have believed them. Her experience, until a human accidentally closed the door to the outside world on her head, was that we are OK. Decent creatures to have in the service of chicks. For that, too, is how she had experienced humans."

This is a tiny taste of Alice's words and, well, of her nature.

I can't remember when I've been so touched by a book. And a writer. The books calls out to be read again and again. Even in its small size, it's too big for just one reading.

HAVE A HEART FROM YOUR LIBRARY

No, we're not passing out chocolates, though that might be a good idea with Valentine's Day around the corner, but here's an idea to get yourself in the spirit.

Use our library catalog to find a book with "Heart" or "Love" in the title -- and give it a try.

I keep a list of books that I read, and here are such books and their authors that I have on my list:

Love in the Time of Cholera - Garcia-Marquez
Bad Love - Kellerman
The Lovely Bones - Sebold
The Forest Lover - Vreeland
Eat, Pray, Love - Gilbert
The man Who Loved China - Winchester
Peony in Love - See
The Man Who Loved Books Too Much - Bartlett
Furious Love - Kashner and Schoenberger
Days of Honey: A Memoir of Food, Love and War - Ciezadlo
The Middle Heart - Lord
Heart of a Patriot - Cleland

There is not one "Romance" book in this list, but there are both fiction and non-fiction books that have something to do with love. Some are by well-known writers; in other cases they are the book that launched a new author.

It's fun to pick a topic and read books with that topic in the title. You really don't know what you are going to get. Sometimes I'm delighted with what I get, and other times I decide it's just not the book for me. (Right now my focus is on books with "PIG" in the title, and am I having fun.)

Just for fun, check the library's catalog and see if one of the "Love" books is in our collection. Or order one from another local library in our system.

Make that your Valentine's Day read! And let me know your plan!
